Forest City Opens Stapleton Visitor Information Center |
High tech displays tell story of nation’s largest “Built Green” community
Denver---Mayor Wellington E. Webb and Forest City officials today opened a “high tech” visitor information center at Stapleton that unveils the wide range of housing types and prices that will be within walking distance of schools, jobs, retail, parks and public transportation in the nation’s largest “Built Green” community.
“This center will do more than merely provide information about the beautiful new homes that will be built at Stapleton,” said Greg Vilkin, president of Forest City Stapleton, Inc., the master developer selected to redevelop the former airport. “It will tell the story of the birth of ‘Denver’s next great neighborhoods’.”
"This is an important milestone for the Stapleton redevelopment," Mayor Webb said. "For those who are first-time home buyers, those who are looking for a new home, and for those who are just curious about the Stapleton transformation, the Stapleton Visitor Center will give citizens one of the first 'hands-on' opportunities to learn about new housing, parks and businesses that are part of this new community."
High tech displays The 5,000 square foot Stapleton Visitor Center features a video wall that integrates actual aerial footage of the property with “virtual reality” images of the first neighborhoods to be built at the former airport. Another highlight includes a network of eight “pavilions,” each with its own high tech sound system and a display that offers glimpses into the residential, office, retail and open space aspects of the new mixed use neighborhoods. The pavilions will also provide information about Stapleton initiatives that include sustainable development, an educational environment that fosters “lifelong learning,” modern telecommunications linkages and other elements that will create a walkable, diverse urban community.
A sustainable, multi-use building The five thousand square foot visitors center is a clear span, steel framed building sustainably designed with energy efficient materials that include special window glazing and carpeting made of recycled materials. Currently located at the corner of Martin Luther King Boulevard and Syracuse Street, the building can be “deconstructed” and moved to a new location for future re-use. The Stapleton Visitor Center opens to the public for the first time at noon on Saturday, January 12th. After that date, it will be open daily from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Call (303) 355-9600 for more information.
Diversity of housing types and pricing Showcased in the Visitor Center and adjacent sales trailers will be a diversity of homes provided by Stapleton’s first builders: McStain Neighborhoods, Trimark Communities, John Laing Homes, KB Home, Wonderland Homes, Parkwood Homes and New Town Builders. Additionally, Forest City will select other builders to provide 800 homes in its workforce housing program. Homes within that program will be restricted for purchase by police officers, fire fighters, teachers, nurses and other members of the workforce whose incomes fall between $36,000 for a single individual and $50,000 for a household of five.
Built Green In February 2000, Forest City signed an agreement to purchase all 2,935 acres of developable land at the former Stapleton International Airport for $79.4 million, a market price established by a Federal Aviation Administration approved appraisal process. Guided by The Stapleton Development Plan produced by the citizens of Denver, Forest City is creating pedestrian-scale neighborhoods in which it is requiring all 12,000 homes and apartments to meet or exceed the “Built Green” standards established by the Home Builders Association of Metro Denver.
New parks As part of its purchase agreement, Forest City will also help to preserve more than 1,100 acres of new parks and open space at Stapleton to enhance the quality of life in Metropolitan Denver. Forest City has already paid more than $4 million of the $44 million it has pledged to preserve that open space over the next fifteen years. The new open space at Stapleton expands the park system of the City and County of Denver by 30 percent.
